Do you feel that all believers are qualified to minister to others? Why or why not?

Do you feel that all believers are qualified to minister...

I believe that all believers are called to minister, but I don't believe that all believers are taught how to minister. In the churches I grew up in we were taught to be judgemental and condemning... I still struggle with showing God's love and not spewing self righteous condemnation. To my understanding, to minister implies to NOT spew self righteous condemnation.
So I'm not sure how to answer that question... Called to ...yes Qualified...not really at least not without some refining by God... I've been at the reciveing end of some really messed up believers who were convinced that they were "helping" me.

You make an excellent point;

You make an excellent point; and one that should be emphasized. That is, the difference between the raw ministerial material that God has placed in us, from the foundations of time, vs. the amount of training needed for each of us to be effective in a positive way; not a destructive way.

And, you are right when you say that to minister means not spewing self righteous condemnation. In fact, the word ministry is derived from the greek word 'diakonos', which means to be a servant or minister. Oddly enough, it is the same word that the word 'deacon' comes from. I wish more deacons acted like servants.

The reason I use the word 'qualified' is this...consider the following scripture:

He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant – not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
2 Corinthians 3:6

So, in a spiritual sense, yes, all are qualified...or, at least, competent. However, it is always a good idea to surround ourselves with people who know more than we do; who have been around and know what works and what doesn't. This is the crux of good mentorship. All of this points to the idea, for me, that an advanced seminary degree is not, necessarily, the final arbiter on a person's ability to hear and obey the call of God. Yet, in church culture, we are still very much a culture of haves and have nots; Here's the deal: It is God that determines our ability, not man. And if we, as believers, can have a personal relationship with him, then can't we also seek him, directly, for our role in the kingdom, without the compulsory intervention or approval others?

It is one of the areas that I am most passionate about. There are tons of people, right now, in churches, who are being told that they can not minister for this reason, or that; mostly due to a lack of formal education. This, in my opinion, is unconscionable. Didactic education, while a wonderful and relavent thing, does not determine a person's annointing to serve others in the name of our King. It is a convention that needs to be diminished.

Yes, we should be willing to allow others to speak into our lives. This is being teachable. But, who we are or what we were made to do is not for others to determine. Neither is it another's responsibility or duty to stifle another believer's God given calling.

Ministry of Reconciliation

We have been given the ministry and message of reconciliation. We have also been given a living example in Christ Jesus how to walk it out in our lives. We are to give what we have received.

When we find we have little or nothing to give we can immerse our selves in the living water of God's word. Once we know the word, by the grace of God we are free to choose obedience to the word. Obedience produces fruit.

We are Christ's ambassadors - we represent Him to the world. How we represent Him is a reflection on how well we know Him. The better we know Him the more we trust Him.

The fruit of trust is faith. Faith allows us to become even greater ministers of reconciliation. We embrace the title "Christian" which means "Christ like" - isn't that our goal?

We are to run the race to get the prize. If we are continually striving for Christ's likeness instead of comfort we will be blessed with a great revival. It starts right here, right now. How will you represent Christ today?

How will you represent Christ at work, driving in traffic, with your wife and children, with your friends, with the needy, with strangers, with those who hate you? How will you respond?

Will you respond with patience, kindness, pride, arrogance, or perhaps by condemning them with the past? Do you need more patience? Are you running low on kindness?

Instead of asking God for more patience or to give you kindness - ask Him for more LOVE. If we have love, we will bear the fruit of love. God is love. Ask Him to give you His love for everyone you meet. We live in a world that is mortally wounded, desperately needing to be loved. They will know us by our love...

2 Cor 5:17-21 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

James 1:22-25 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.

John 8:31b-32 Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Acts 8:6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said.

Acts 14:3 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and wonders.

1Cor 9:24-27 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last for ever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize

1Cor 13:4-8a Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

1John 4:8,16 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

Good word, Dale.

Good word, Dale.

smokehouse

I can take no credit for what you read. I find myself changing as I present myself to the Lord. The truth that you read in the words I'm blessed to pen is burning within me. It is a burning not of my own doing. The fact of the matter is I find my self continually smothering the flames. I'm ashammed that I resist the grace that has been so willingly poured out for me. What you see are flares of truth in a life of smoke. Lord, I'm tired of smoldering, quenching the fire within me, it is my hearts desire to be a tinderbox so dry that the slightest spark will produce the all consuming flames that I desire. That I may be an eternal flame for you. Lord consume all that I am. I'm fearful Lord, like a wave of the sea blown and tossed by the wind. Your word tells me that perfect love casts out fear. Saturate me in your love. I need more love - more of You! Give me your love for everyone I meet, pass by, read or hear about, even those as far as my eyes can see. Lord, open my eyes to the pain and affliction from the lack of love. Let me be a minister of your love. It is your love that makes the fire burn so brightly. Let all my days be a testiment unto your glory. Teach me to love like You do.
