Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.
Psalm 57:8
Who can say, with even a modicum of earnest, that they have never experienced a moment where they found themselves, if only temporarily, overwhelmed and astounded at God's creation?
Have you never felt utterly moot whilst standing at the base of a snow covered mountain? Have you never been caught in a storm at sea, and realized the sheer lack of respect for you that the waves held? Have you never seen the symphony of mathematical precision give rise to the blooming of a desert flower?
During these moments, it can feel as if the veil is removed just a little bit; that we are, somehow, a little closer to the truth; and to God. The world slows. Sounds become faint and sharp...all at the same time. Things begin to make a little more sense and, just for a moment, we feel almost awake.
Indeed, God is in those moments. He communicates to us, through the many complexities of His work. And this wondrous creation, that we have yet to even begin to understand, is but a beautiful thought forged in the unsearchable reaches of God's sovereign mind. Every sequence of amino acids ever assembled; every valley gracefully yet brutally carved by the massive glaciers of years past; every last supernova that endeavored to change the shape of a galaxy in this unimaginably large universe...began in that single thought.
Take hold of those moments; with fervor. Linger on them. Pay attention.
Most of all, friends, use these moments to give thanks that you have been made awake in spirit through the sacrifice of the Son of the Creator of everything. Unbound by eternal penalty, we can truly join the rest of creation in honoring He who willed it into existence.
Do this, and take heart that we, among all of our Father's work, are treasured beyond measure. That we, frail and lost and full of capabilities good and horrible, have captured His heart and His enduring favor. It is us that He seeks, wanting only for us to seek Him as well.
